Kent Police has begun an inquiry into the incident, which happened at Lydd Ranges, on Romney Marsh, on Wednesday.

The soldier has not been officially named and his next of kin have not yet been informed, an MoD spokesman said.

In 2006, a soldier died during an exercise at the firing ranges, which are on coastline 15 miles (24km) south of Ashford.

Guardsman Iain Wright, who served with the 1st Battalion Grenadier Guards, died from a single gunshot wound to the head.

The range has been used for military training for more than 150 years.
