The movie made $14.2m (￡9.1m) in its second week of release.
Brad Pitt baseball drama, Moneyball, remained at number two, with takings of $12.5m (￡8m).
The Lion King 3D slipped to third spot - it has earned $79.7m (￡51.3m) since it was re-released.
The highest new entry was 50/50, a comedy-drama about a young man's battle against cancer.
Other new entries on the chart included police drama Courageous and thriller Dream House, starring real-life husband and wife Daniel Craig and Rachel Weisz.
The film is about a family who learns of the brutal murder of former residents of their seemingly idyllic new home.
